Dealing with toxic people, in general, is hard enough, but being in a relationship with them is probably one of the worst experiences one can have. Unfortunately, many of these people — narcissists, sociopaths or, even worse, narcissistic sociopaths — are masters of manipulation and can be extremely clever when it comes to luring their victims. Some of the warning signs below may appear before you jump into a committed relationship with a toxic person.
These individuals lack empathy toward people and may gain pleasure from harming others. This can cause them to manipulate, exploit, or violate people, which may make them dangerous to society. Sometimes known as malignant narcissists or narcopaths, narcissistic sociopaths are a sub-type of people with narcissistic personality disorder. They are driven by a high need for control and power, and they often take advantage of others to meet their own needs. People with NPD have a distorted sense of reality. Some believe that others are out to get them, which drives an internalized state of paranoia.
Getting out of—and, better yet, getting over —any romantic relationship can be a total nightmare. This was no ordinary relationship; therefore, it's no ordinary path to recovery. That reality is absolutely devastating.
