What I Learned From Dating a Much Older Man

I myself have experience of such a relationship from my teenage years. When I first met my partner, I expected him to be how many middle-aged or older men tend to be: entitled, arrogant and sexist. The usual onslaught women and female-presenting people put up with everyday. Yet, in a short amount of time, underneath a somewhat roguish demeanour, I discovered an emotionally open and vulnerable man. Instead, I was simply given a space to freely vent; my concerns, irrational fears, fantasies, they were all welcomed and never judged. It was also terrifying, not least because I was falling in love with a man twice my age.

He was 56, running a small chain of hardware stores. When he called and invited me to lunch the next day, I thought he might be offering me a job. I was happy to talk with anyone about rehabilitating old structures.

If I had a chance to redo the 20 months spent with you in a toxic relationship, I would. I would take back all the times I spent justifying your behaviour towards me. I would invest more in people who actually cared about me. Fresh out of junior college, I was a free-spirited child with time to spare prior to the beginning of a life-changing ordeal: university.
