LoginA dating scan in pregnancy is just one of the many major milestones for you and your baby. It's done to work out the gestational age of your baby, or how far along in pregnancy you are. It tends to be done between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. It helps your doctor or midwife get a better idea of your due date, see if you're having multiples, and check on their growth and development. During a dating scan, a trained healthcare professional will take a look at your growing baby. The scan can also detect your baby's heartbeat.
It includes:. Our Dating Scan is designed to date your early pregnancy and assure you that your pregnancy is continuing. You will receive a clear written report of your scan results, including our recommendation for your next steps. If we recommend a medical follow-up, we can email a copy of your report to your healthcare provider at no extra cost if you provide their contact details. If you are experiencing pelvic pain or bleeding we recommend consulting your GP or an Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, or calling for advice, before booking this scan. If you still have concerns, can't be seen quickly or are not offered an ultrasound scan, we are more than happy to see you. You are welcome to bring guests to this scan, but as this is a very early stage scan we recommend you do not bring children.
In most cases the scan will be performed transabdominally, but there are some situations where a transvaginal internal ultrasound may be necessary. Transvaginal ultrasound involves inserting a thin transducer ultrasound probe slightly thicker than a tampon into the vagina to get more detailed images as the transducer is closer to the pelvic organs. This improves the accuracy of diagnosis.
This is a scan done early in pregnancy before 12 weeks of gestation. It is only natural to be curious and concerned about pregnancy and early pregnancy scans can give you peace of mind. Normally it includes a scan across your lower abdomen with a full bladder trans abdominal scan and an internal scan transvaginal scan. The internal scan does not harm the embryo in anyway and is a standard practice to obtain adequate details of early pregnancy.
