What are the Bases in Relationships?

For modern dating, you need a whole relationship dictionary just to keep up with all the new terms! From breadcrumbing to love bombing, there are a lot of definitions to learn to keep up with the lingo. Even though euphemisms around bases in relationships have been around for a very long time, it can be hard to keep track of what each term means. If you want to chat in code with your besties about your big date last night — you better scrub up on the right language! Relationship bases are used as euphemisms for the level of physical intimacy a couple has achieved in their relationship. Depending on who you talk to, there are different definitions for different bases.

One of the most common sports metaphors for dating comes from baseball: "making it to first base. Reaching first base in baseball means taking the first step towards scoring a point. Continuing with our baseball metaphor, second base refers to the next step couples take after making out, specifically, above-the-waist touching and especially stimulation of the breast for women. While the bases are pretty well established in these metaphors, the timing is not. You could get to second base on the first date or the tenth. The timing is up to you and your partner. The next move is to third base, which involves manual stimulation below the waist using the mouth, fingers, or toys.

It's all fun and exciting until they randomly bring up bases without any previous mention of baseball — "Yeah, I still can't believe we made it to second base last night. When someone mentions first base, second base, third base, or a home run, they're likely referring to the bases of dating, sex, and relationships.
