First Day Activities: Speed Dating

I love trying out new activities for cooperative learning, and speed dating is one of my favorite methods of encouraging students to work together. I use this teaching strategy for short lesson moments ranging from 10 to 20 minutes. Wanna try one way now? For this activity I created sheets with fun things to know about people; words like: hobbies, pets, family, friends, home, etc. Then I put one sheet in between each pair. Speed dating is such a fun activity for collaborative learning, as well as just plain practice of speaking fluency. It may be awkward at first, but this is really a good activity to take away any pressure and to scaffold speaking practice at the same time. I used to always just use the speaking tasks our textbooks had available. But those were boring, and quite frankly, inauthentic. I am to make my speaking activities as meaningful as possible, and my students love it.

Speaking- First Dates and speed dating

A few weeks ago I finished my first academic year of teaching Oral English at a university in the Middle Kingdom. Even the work has been okay. After a bit of context setting, vocab work and guided discussion in the first hour, I sit them down and tell them to write 5 questions for a first date.
