I Relived My Own Traumatic Arranged Marriage Journey While Watching ‘Indian Matchmaking’ on Netflix

It seemed like an unlikely fit at first glance. But I was pleasantly surprised. Two things kept me engaged and entertained throughout the series. In each episode, Aleeza meets Jewish men and women who are looking to be set up for marriage. They range in age from their 20s to 50s, come from a wide range of places—from cities with big Jewish communities like LA and Miami to places with small Jewish communities like Kansas City to more remote locations like Jackson Hole, Wyoming—and diverse Jewish backgrounds. She begins each meeting by asking them about their Jewish identity and values and the qualities of their ideal life partner, their bashert. Then, she shows her client a photo of a potential match or two.

Matchmaking has been a part of Jewish life since the Book of Genesis. Shidduchin is the process of matching two Jewish singles for the purpose of marriage. Judaism views marriage as the basis of human companionship and the cornerstone of Jewish community. In Hebrew, a match is known as a shidduch and the person who facilitates a match is a shadchan. But one aspect common to them all is reliance on the shadchan. Being a successful shadchan is considered especially meritorious — according to Jewish oral tradition, introducing three couples that ultimately marry guarantees the shadchan a place in the heavenly realm of the afterlife. In biblical times, marriages were commonly arranged and negotiated by the families of the prospective couple.
