LoginAfter church one Sunday, Dan listened as I muddled through some thoughts for an upcoming retreat I was co-teaching with Stanford. I dismissed his encouragement with a laugh. But months later, when asked by a publisher if I had any book ideas, his words came back to me. Dan is one of a number of men over the years who have been friends, allies, and encouragers to me. Emily Hunter McGowan, a lecturer at Wheaton College, recently tweeted her acknowledgment to two men who played pivotal roles in her life by naming gifts they saw in her and encouraging her to develop them. Like me, many other women chimed in with similar stories of significant men in their lives. And, like me, many of these women are married.
I am stuck at the age old question of can men and women be friends. I recently made some new friends since I relocated 2 years ago, 2 of these new friends are men. One is actually a former work colleague and despite him often over sharing about his dating life, there is not an issue.
What does the Bible say about? An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does.
How should husbands and wives navigate individual friendships with the opposite sex? Also, let me know your thoughts in the comment section. Have opposite-sex friendships caused any friction in your marriage? No big deal?
