As this is my final editorial before handing over to my colleague David Washbrook, it is perhaps appropriate that I should muse on the subject of mortality. Death, like VAT and other taxes, is an inevitable feature of college life, but death resonates especially in the case of those colleges that encourage Fellows to remain present and active after resigning from their formal teaching posts. We print below obituaries of two Fellows who played important roles in College management and administration during large parts of the second half of last century: John Bradfield, Senior Bursar par excellence, and Martin Cowley, who was Tutor for Advanced Students as well as a Director of Studies in Engineering.
