LoginThe purpose of this study is to use mixed methods research and grounded theory to determine what obstacles a predominantly White university contains for interracial couples. Previous research involving interracial couples on college campuses has only focused on quantitative surveys. A sample size of students from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo participated in a quantitative survey as well as 12 interracial couples that were separately interviewed. The data revealed that Cal Poly students felt interracial couples were generally supported on campus. However, the racial or ethnic identity of certain partners within an interracial relationship determined their comfort level on campus.
In the racial and ethnic classification system used for this report, individuals are classified first by ethnicity defined as whether someone is Hispanic or not and then by race. As such, all references to whites, blacks, Asians, American Indians, multiracial persons or persons of some other race include those who are not Hispanic; Hispanics may be of any race. By the same token, if a Hispanic black person marries a non-Hispanic white person, their marriage would be classified as one between a Hispanic and a white person rather than a black and a white person. Beginning with the census, individuals could choose to identify with more than one group in response to the race question.
The current study explored the associations between relationship stigma, Racial-ethnic Worldview REW; a construct developed as a comprehensive assessment of individual's perceptions of race and ethnicity , and relationship quality among those in interracial relationships i. One type of REW Color-blind Achieved was especially susceptible to the negative consequences of stigma from family members.
Since then, intermarriage rates have steadily climbed. All told, more than , newlyweds in had recently entered into a marriage with someone of a different race or ethnicity. By comparison, in , the first year for which detailed data are available, about , newlyweds had done so. The long-term annual growth in newlyweds marrying someone of a different race or ethnicity has led to dramatic increases in the overall number of people who are presently intermarried — including both those who recently married and those who did so years, or even decades, earlier. Overall increases in intermarriage have been fueled in part by rising intermarriage rates among black newlyweds and among white newlyweds.
