My Experience In An Interracial Relationship

My MIL lectured me about all the 'Karen racism' she is facing. I just put them in their place and continued being happy in my relationship. I refuse to let them into my life anymore than that because they have already dismissed and invalidated the core of my being. He's taken steps to better understand my life experiences and perspective and has found his own therapist who is also Asian-American to help him through different situations. I couldn't ask for a better partner. They often tease him about being with a 'white feminist,' but he seems okay with it. I sometimes feel like I got into a time machine when we visit his friends and the men are watching TV while women are in the kitchen, but I openly talk about it. For some reason, that was a really difficult concept for them to grasp. People stare, of course.

I think what Lizzo is trying to convey in the lyrics is that she believes that any type of romantic relationship should be embraced, particularly interracial ones! Yet interracial love isn't often celebrated in the media as something that is well Interracial couples account for a wide range of diverse ethnic backgrounds, but for the sake of this piece I will be focusing on my experience as a black woman. I, for one, am for any type of romantic relationship that enables one to experience love in all its wondrous forms. I am currently in an interracial relationship myself and have been in mainly mixed-raced relationships for most of my adult dating experiences. My partner is mixed-raced, half-Chinese, half-White.

Media commonly makes the mistake of portraying interracial relationships with white people as shining examples of racial progress [and] assuming interracial relationships between people of color are devoid of any need for progress, or even learning. Perhaps the most harmful fiction the media has pushed is that interracial relationships are special. At their core, interracial relationships are deeply boring.

Society's biases can cast shadows on even the purest connections. If you're in an interracial relationship, or just started dating, you fully understand the unique challenges that can arise from dating from a different race. Their story has provoked intense discussion about dating between races and it makes one wonder why such scenarios still take place in the century we are in.
