It's all fun and exciting until they randomly bring up bases without any previous mention of baseball — "Yeah, I still can't believe we made it to second base last night. When someone mentions first base, second base, third base, or a home run, they're likely referring to the bases of dating, sex, and relationships. Through the baseball metaphor, there are different sets of bases that represent several levels of verbal and physical intimacy you may reach with your partner. We reached out to psychotherapist and author, Natalie Kohlhaas , to further explain the metaphor and give us a rundown on the bases of dating and what they really entail. While the "bases" of dating aren't technical terms, they serve as casual slang for different levels of sex and relationships.

In American slang , baseball metaphors for sex are often used as euphemisms for the degree of physical intimacy achieved in sexual encounters or relationships. Among the most commonly used metaphors is the progress of a batter and base-runner in describing levels of physical intimacy traditionally from a heterosexual perspective. Definitions vary, but the following are typical usages of the terms: [4]. The metaphors are found variously in popular American culture, with one well-known example in the Meat Loaf song " Paradise by the Dashboard Light ", which describes a young couple " making out ", with a voice-over commentary of a portion of a baseball game, as a metaphor for the couple's activities.
One of the most common sports metaphors for dating comes from baseball: "making it to first base. Reaching first base in baseball means taking the first step towards scoring a point. Continuing with our baseball metaphor, second base refers to the next step couples take after making out, specifically, above-the-waist touching and especially stimulation of the breast for women. While the bases are pretty well established in these metaphors, the timing is not.
