Individual students can and do opt out of casual hookup sexual encounters, but few can escape dealing with that culture. Hookup culture is simply the newest stage in the evolution of sexual norms and behavior in America.
One of the most detrimental and perhaps overlooked factors in the mental health crisis facing adolescents and young adults is hookup culture. A recent Tinder ad is a great example. Yes, but so disturbing. The message distorts the hope of finding love and connection into the promise of a fleeting moment of disconnected sex. But how did we get here and how can we turn around a cultural movement that is so destructive to the health of our children?
