The dark side of hookup culture for women

CW File. Tara Fischer , Contributing Columnist December 2, Hookup culture, one of meaningless and casual sex, has increasingly become the new norm. Young adults, particularly college students, have declared these no-strings-attached encounters as fun, exciting and empowering, which they can be. However, an argument can be made that these noncommittal relationships may be harmful and even anti-feminist. Proponents of hookup culture argue that women participating in strictly physical relationships with men are taking ownership of their bodies and defying the patriarchy, which, in many cases, can be true.

To analyzes the ins and outs of hookup culture on college campuses, questioning whether casual sex really empowers women. There is nothing wrong with a woman wanting casual sex. There is nothing wrong with a woman wanting something more than casual sex. Hookup culture has become increasingly prevalent among American youth, dominating college campuses as the default mode of sexual interactions. With the idea of being tied down as something to avoid, hookup culture allows college students to engage in sexual activity without feeling like they have to compromise their freedom or autonomy. For many women who have traditionally been pressured to choose between a relationship and a career, the freedom of hookup culture is often interpreted as an outlet for women to be as sexually free as men, who are perceived as able to engage in sexual activity without consequence.

While this can seem liberating and exciting to have experiences with different people and encounters, it comes at a cost. Quite usually, an anti-feminist cost. The idea of women getting to choose their sexual partners and ideals without being slut-shamed, sounds inviting. Women, in theory, are able to have control over their own pleasure and satisfaction. While this is unfortunately the reality, social media and the music industry continue to distort this reality as something desirable for women. While these women are clearly talented artists, their lyrics and meaning behind the songs they make tend to overly romanticize hookup culture, and under the surface, objectify women and pin them against one another.

'Coercion and Conformity and Despair': A Feminist Critique of Hooking Up

Hookup culture: the encouragement of casual, uncommitted sex encounters without necessarily including bonding or emotional intimacy. The infamous one-night stand is often portrayed as part of the university experience. But how empowering, and how prevalent, really is hookup culture? As university is often a space for young people to explore their sexuality—perhaps for the first time—the infamous one-night stand is portrayed as part of the university experience. Hookup culture is endorsed in a multitude of ways for young adults, particularly for students starting university.
