LoginCW File. Tara Fischer , Contributing Columnist December 2, Hookup culture, one of meaningless and casual sex, has increasingly become the new norm. Young adults, particularly college students, have declared these no-strings-attached encounters as fun, exciting and empowering, which they can be. However, an argument can be made that these noncommittal relationships may be harmful and even anti-feminist. Proponents of hookup culture argue that women participating in strictly physical relationships with men are taking ownership of their bodies and defying the patriarchy, which, in many cases, can be true.

While these women are clearly talented artists, their lyrics and meaning behind the songs they make tend to overly romanticize hookup culture, and under the surface, objectify women and pin them against one another.
Hookup culture: the encouragement of casual, uncommitted sex encounters without necessarily including bonding or emotional intimacy. The infamous one-night stand is often portrayed as part of the university experience. But how empowering, and how prevalent, really is hookup culture? As university is often a space for young people to explore their sexuality—perhaps for the first time—the infamous one-night stand is portrayed as part of the university experience. Hookup culture is endorsed in a multitude of ways for young adults, particularly for students starting university.
