Confronting the Toll of Hookup Culture

LAWRENCE — A new study from the University of Kansas shows that in "hookup culture," — in which young people may engage in sex without the traditional courtship practice of dating — there is a discrepancy between what college students are saying and what they are doing when it comes to sexual activity on dates. KU scholars analyzed data from a survey of more than 20, college students describing their most recent date. They compared the findings to the traditional dating scripts and norms, such as the expectation that a man will ask a woman on a date, and pay, and the woman will regulate how much sexual contact happens. Findings showed that when men initiated dates, sex was more restricted than when women asked the man for a date. The modern idea of dating as part of courtship was born in the s. Most scholarly research on young adult sexuality in the last 20 years has focused on hookups, or casual sexual encounters not associated with a traditional date, said Sam Kendrick, KU doctoral student in sociology and lead author of the study. Things may be changing quickly. We know they sometimes do. Students regularly overestimate the extent to which their peers are participating in hookup culture. In reality, the average graduating senior reports hooking up eight times over the course of four years.

The Spotlight

As a top institution of higher education, Princeton tries to do its best to prepare us for our future: offering career fairs, hosting resume writing sessions, and even offering Last Lectures about careers in local government. But there is one place where the University is falling short: preparing its students to form healthy relationships. The University must provide better resources in educating its student body about the potential social and emotional harms of hookup culture during freshman orientation and follow up in SHARE training material for upperclassmen and eating clubs.
