Herpes generally refers to genital herpes usually caused by HSV-2 , but cold sores often caused by HSV-1 are also herpes. Either form of the virus can show up in either area of the body mouth or genitals. HSV spreads through sexual contact, including oral sex. You can even contract the virus when using condoms or other barrier methods, because sores often appear in places not protected through barrier use, such as the buttocks and thighs.
