LoginFinding time to do anything in residency is definitely a challenge, especially finding time to date. Be flexible. Flexibility is an important characteristic for any resident, any physician, and honestly anyone. Being a resident and a lifelong learner will require you to be flexible in so many ways in your professional life. Oftentimes we forget to implement that same flexibility into our personal lives. Whether it be with your friends, family, or significant other, remember to put yourself in their shoes and try to understand each scenario from their perspective, just as we have all learned to do with our patients.
Dating, in general, is challenging but dating a resident doctor during their residency years is completely different. The first couple of years of their residency is the hardest. Tip 1: Be patient. So, if you are dating a resident, be patient and wait for a reply. If all of a sudden you are going on week to several without a reply, then I would check in later in the evenings.

Teaching certainly does slow cases down, but as residents, we are here to learn. True, I did have to be back at a. I have always appreciated the benefits of hard work, and was advised to continue with that mentality as I progressed through my training. I was applauded by my attendings for coming in at night or on the weekend to cover emergent cases like ruptured ectopics, and I built my reputation as a reliable and hard-working resident. I reminded myself often that residency is a finite period of time, and with nothing holding me accountable to show up at home at a reasonable time — like pets, or kids, or a significant other — I spent the little free time I had on work-related things.
