LoginWhether flirting in a bar, rubbing elbows at the office, or trying to catch the eye of the handsome barista, dating is an elusive game with a large playing field. Dating apps such as Tinder seek to connect people in all places, making love more accessible, but there is one untapped area that is ideal for forming connections: an airplane. Imagine boarding a Paris-bound flight — six hours of idle waiting, stale airplane food and outdated movies awaits you. Rather than pass the time with intermittent naps, new dating app AirDates turns flying time into a first date. AirDates works by having users input their upcoming flight itineraries prior to arriving at their departure terminal.
Yes, I know that is not a word, but for this, it best describes how I struggle with getting past the first or third date. Oh, wait. I often feel like I have failed somewhere.
LaGuardia Airport is hardly a romantic destination — but for at least one couple, it's where their love story began. You see, Kinsella, a documentary filmmaker, and Puckett, a software and hardware engineer manager, matched on the dating app Hinge. After exchanging a few messages, they made loose plans to meet up. The only thing getting in the way of them meeting sooner was that both were coincidentally heading out of town for a few days. Neither had said where, so little did they know the journey to their destination was identical.
M aybe Delta had it right with those napkins after all. Along those same lines, App in the Air — a travel app designed to help frequent fliers do things like estimate TSA wait times and get real-time fight updates — is also getting into the in-flight hookup game. The seven-year-old app is promoting a feature allowing fliers to see who else is on their flight, in their airport, or at their destination.
