Knowledge about the early history of Kurdish women is limited by both the dearth of records and the near absence of research. In 16th century , Prince Sharaf ad-Din Bitlisi wrote a book titled Sharafnama , which makes references to the women of the ruling landowning class, and their exclusion from public life and the exercise of state power. It says that the Kurds of the Ottoman Empire , who follow Islamic tradition , took four wives and, if they could afford it, four maids or slave girls. This regime of polygyny was, however, practiced by a minority, which included primarily the members of the ruling landowning class, the nobility, and the religious establishment. Sharaf ad-Din Bitlisi also mentioned three Kurdish women assuming power in Kurdish principalities after the death of their husbands in order to transfer it to their sons upon their adulthood.

The double discrimination faced by Kurdish women in Iran

Dozens of Iranian cities and towns have been gripped by a relentless wave of anger since 16 September, when year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini — or Jina Amini, going by her Kurdish birth name - died in the custody of the Islamic Republic's morality police after she was arrested for allegedly breaching the strict dress code for women. The nationwide demonstrations began in north-western Iran, where Kurds make up about 10 percent of the Iranian population , before quickly spreading to the rest of the country - and they show no signs of slowing despite a rising death toll. With the protest movement following the lead of Kurdistan, the Kurdish cause has rapidly become intertwined with that of other oppressed communities in Iran. Women across Iran, especially Kurdish women, have been at the forefront of the uprising. The government has been trying to suppress the unrest with deadly force, mass arrests, and by curbing Internet access.
