Knowing how scientists estimate the age of fossils is one of the most fundamental concepts of paleontology. In this activity, students will learn how to use relative and absolute dating techniques to estimate the age of a mystery fossil. Students are presented with a collection of fossils from the Turkana Basin in Kenya and asked to determine the age of a mystery fossil. They then see a hillside with stratigraphic layers where the fossils were found.
