LoginSkip navigation! Story from Voices of Disability. Chelsea Bear. Last Updated September 21, , PM. Listen to this Story Narrated by Chelsea Bear. The disabled community makes up one in four Americans, which means their lives are intertwined within the spectrum of all relationships. As my friends and I started swiping and making virtual connections, it was inevitable that a match would eventually ask to meet in person. This was when I felt an anxiety that my able-bodied friends did not have to endure.
My name is Jess Paciello, and I am 21 years old. I guess that makes me a millennial yikes! I do want to talk about dating with disabilities though, because I believe that this topic is super important.
Due to the nature of disabilities, you may feel that your partner with a disability is not deserving of love. Consequently, you may feel you are doing them a favor by loving them. However, nothing is further from the truth. Persons with disabilities deserve true love and affection just like any other person. Their disability is just like other characteristics, the way some people are tall, others short, some dark, and others brown. They all deserve love.
No two conditions or individual experiences are the same, so all disabilities come with their own host of unique challenges—especially when it comes to dating and letting someone know what exactly they might be signing up for. Should you include it in your profile, and risk turning off a bunch of potential matches before they even finish reading your bio? Do you wait until the first date? Try to bring it up in casual conversation before an in-person meeting? When everyone is making snap judgments as they swipe their way through potential matches, something as insignificant as a poorly-framed picture can be enough cause for someone to say thank you, next.
