LoginGeological time — 1. Absolute age dating — 3. Geological time scale — 4. Geological maps. It may surprise you to learn that geologists were able to determine much of the history of the Earth and its life without knowing anything about the actual ages of the rocks that they studied. Through use of absolute age dating techniques which were developed during the 20th century; see Section 2 , they were able to later assign dates in years before the preset to important events in Earth's history. But, before that, they relied upon a different approach to first determine the sequence of important events in Earth's past: relative age dating.
We have already seen the principles on which relative dating is based. Now it's time to put them into practice. You have to be able to describe the geological history of each case from a geological section. The exercises that we will see in this course are simple, but in Biology and Geology of 1st Baccalaureate or in Geology of 2nd Baccalaureate we will complicate them a little more. We will start by watching a video without sound as an example of how the geological history of a place is being produced.
A Relative Age Dating Activity By Christine McLelland Topic: Relative age dating of geologic cross sections Content Standard: National Earth and Space Science Standard Content Objective: This exercise will introduce your students to the concept of relative age dating, and allow them to practice their new skills by determining the age sequence of geologic events in a cross section. Materials Needed: Student pages, which contain cross sections. Author: Written by Christine V. It is a bit of a mind-puzzler, so have fun! Background: Before absolute dating of rocks was developed in the 20 th century, geologists had to rely on relative age dating, which places geologic events in their order of occurrence.
Teaching about Earth's history is a challenge for all teachers. Time factors of millions and billions of years is difficult even for adults to comprehend. However, "relative" dating or time can be an easy concept for students to learn. Once they are able to manipulate the cards into the correct sequence, they are asked to do a similar sequencing activity using fossil pictures printed on "rock layer" cards.
